The Gesso and its Application

After extensive research and testing, we found that Tri-Art’s finest quality acrylic gesso is the one that meets our rigorous quality standards. It has a bright reflectivity due to high titanium content, remains matte in finish, and adheres well to the substrate surface.

Our stretchers have two coats of gesso. Both are applied by hand after the raw canvas is stretched. This is done to stabilize the canvas. The first coat is applied with a wooden squeegee to push the gesso deep into the fabric weave and achieve the best possible bond. It is then sanded to produce a consistent surface. The second coat is rolled onto the canvas, giving the surface a tooth ready to accept pigments.
